The Rivers State House of Assembly has dismissed reports claiming that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, has been suspended, insisting that the procedure is still ongoing.
The Assembly made this known in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George.
According to the statement, the impeachment process, which began on Thursday, January 8, 2026, is being carried out strictly in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
“The Rivers State House of Assembly is pleased to inform the good people of Rivers State that the impeachment process commenced by the House on Thursday, January 8, 2026, is fully on course in line with relevant provisions of the Constitution,” the statement said.
The Assembly disclosed that two separate notices of allegations of gross misconduct had been issued against the governor and the deputy governor under Section 188 of the Constitution. The notices, it said, were forwarded to both officials by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, and the lawmakers are awaiting their responses.
The House maintained that it is constitutionally empowered to act in defence of the rule of law and prevent infractions by any public office holder in the state, stressing that lawmakers remain duty-bound to carry out this responsibility.
Reacting to claims that the impeachment process had been halted, the Assembly accused some individuals and media platforms of deliberately spreading false information to mislead the public and create disaffection between the legislature and the people.
“We are aware that certain persons and media platforms are again misinforming the public by claiming that the process has been halted or discontinued. With the permission of the Speaker, we urge the public to disregard such false narratives,” the statement said.
The Assembly added that it would not be intimidated or deterred by threats or what it described as “cheap blackmail,” reaffirming its commitment to upholding democratic principles.
The lawmakers also thanked residents of Rivers State for their support and prayers, while extending solidarity to democrats who believe in the Nigerian democratic project.
Meanwhile, it was recalled that during Thursday’s plenary session presided over by the Speaker, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally read the notice of allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Fubara. The allegations reportedly include the demolition of the Assembly complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and alleged refusal to comply with a Supreme Court judgment on the financial autonomy of the legislature.
The impeachment move comes amid the prolonged political crisis in the state, following accusations by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, that Governor Fubara reneged on a peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu in 2025.
