18 Killed as Speeding, Tyre Burst Trigger Fatal Crash in Jigawa

No fewer than 18 persons have been confirmed dead following a fatal road accident in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the crash occurred on Tuesday at about 12:15 p.m. at Danmasara village along the Dutse–Kwanar Huguma road. The accident involved two Volkswagen Golf cars and a tipper truck.

In a statement issued in Dutse, the FRSC spokesperson in the state, Corps Route Commander Yahaya Ibrahim, attributed the incident to excessive speeding, a tyre burst and loss of control. He disclosed that 20 people were involved in the crash, including children.

“Eighteen persons lost their lives in the accident, while the driver of the tipper and his assistant sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Ibrahim said.

He added that FRSC rescue operatives promptly evacuated the injured victims and the bodies of the deceased to Dutse General Hospital.

The tragedy comes barely days after the FRSC confirmed another fatal crash in Ringim Local Government Area on December 25, where 11 persons died and 12 others were injured in a lone accident involving a Volkswagen vehicle, also linked to tyre burst and over-speeding.
