Lagos Lawyer Survives Armed Robbery by Delta Shuttle Driver

A Lagos-based lawyer and Notary Public, Ifenyinwa Christopher, narrowly escaped death after being attacked and robbed by an armed shuttle driver along the Asaba–Benin Expressway in Delta State.

Christopher told PUNCH Metro that she chartered the shuttle on the evening of December 19 while in Asaba for a burial ceremony. As the vehicle reached Ogwashi-Uku, the driver pulled out a gun, assaulted her, and demanded her valuables, including her mobile phone and cash. She said the assailant even bit her eyelids and threatened to kill her, claiming he had previously killed others on the road.

“I kicked the door open and jumped down. When he realised I had escaped, he reversed the vehicle and ran over me twice,” Christopher recounted. She managed to crawl into nearby bushes and hid until daybreak, when villagers and policemen from Akwukwu-Igbo rescued her and took her to a government hospital.

She sustained injuries to her back and eyes and called on the Delta State Government, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the Nigeria Police Force to improve security along the expressway, citing the absence of traffic lights, police posts, and checkpoints as factors that make the area vulnerable to such attacks.

The Delta State Police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said the incident would be investigated. The Asaba–Benin Expressway has been a hotspot for robberies and kidnappings, with previous police operations targeting armed criminals in the area.
