Benin Unity Cup

The Benin Unity Cup kicked off in Benin City over the weekend with Egor Local Government emerging as the standout side after a decisive 5–1 victory over Uhunmwode LG in the opening match.

The tournament began on Friday at the Crescent FC Sports Complex in Irhirhi, where the sponsor, Senator Neda Imasuen, and other dignitaries gathered to witness the opening fixture.

In another tightly contested encounter, Orhiomwon LG and Oredo 2 settled for a 1–1 draw after both sides failed to find a late winner.

However, the scheduled match between Oredo 1 and Ovia South-West LG did not hold, as Ovia South-West failed to turn up, resulting in a walkover victory for Oredo 1.

Senator Imasuen, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, expressed satisfaction with the teams’ performances. He described football as a rapidly expanding global industry and noted that Edo State had the potential to compete at higher levels.

“Football has become a global industry, and Edo State possesses untapped potential capable of reaching elite levels. I urge the teams to strictly follow the competition rules,” he said.

The Benin Unity Cup continues on Monday, with more fixtures expected across participating local governments.
