Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have made a major breakthrough in their fight against illegal arms trafficking with the arrest of a notorious arms dealer and his female accomplice, leading to the recovery of a large cache of live ammunition in Warri.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed the development in a statement released on Saturday, noting that the arrests followed credible intelligence provided by the Force Technical Intelligence Unit (FTIU) in Abuja.
According to Edafe, operatives of the Commissioner of Police Special Assignment Team, led by Julius Robinson, first apprehended a woman identified as Jamila Abubakar at the Conoil Filling Station along Warri–Patani Road, Effurun.
“During her arrest, officers discovered a sum of ₦550,000.00 suspected to be proceeds from illicit arms transactions, neatly concealed in her bag,” Edafe said.
“Her confession led the police to launch a follow-up operation that yielded significant results.”
Acting on her information, police operatives raided the Niger-Cat area of Warri on October 22, 2025, where they arrested Ahmed Ibrahim (31), a well-known arms supplier from Ekpan, Uvwie Local Government Area.
A search of his residence uncovered a large quantity of ammunition, including:
- 115 rounds of 7.63mm AK-47 live ammunition,
- 220 rounds of SMG rifle ammunition, and
- 32 live cartridges.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Ibrahim is a key supplier of weapons to bandit groups in northern Nigeria and has been on the police watch list for his role in multiple kidnapping and armed robbery cases.
“He is also linked to the abduction and killing of Ogheneovo Onemu, who was kidnapped on May 17, 2024, in Ajaokuta Community, Ughelli North LGA, despite her family paying a ₦4 million ransom,” Edafe added.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Olufemi Abaniwonda, commended the officers for their professionalism and swift coordination, describing the arrests as a “clear demonstration of the command’s resolve to disrupt criminal networks and stop the flow of illegal arms in Delta State.”
Abaniwonda reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order while urging residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities.
He also shared the command’s emergency hotlines for public use: 08036684974, 08114895600, and 08025666914.
“The Delta State Police Command remains steadfast in its duty to protect lives and property while ensuring that criminal elements face the full weight of the law,” the commissioner assured.
