A man identified simply as Ghenero has been stabbed to death during a violent altercation reportedly linked to a business-related debt in the Iyara area of Delta State.

According to police sources, the incident occurred on the night of October 12 when the deceased was confronted at his residence by an acquaintance who accused him of withholding money from a business transaction.

“The suspect, accompanied by his friend, went to Ghenero’s house to demand payment. The confrontation degenerated into a fight, during which the victim was stabbed,” a police officer told PUNCH Metro on Tuesday.

The suspects allegedly fled the scene immediately after the attack, leaving Ghenero in a pool of blood. He was later confirmed dead. Preliminary investigations suggest that the dispute may have been linked to an Internet-based business deal that went sour.

A social media user, Leen Thomas, who commented on the incident in a Facebook post, claimed that the altercation also had cult-related undertones, alleging that the deceased and one of the suspects belonged to rival confraternities.

“One of them is a member of the Vikings confraternity, while the other belongs to the Jew confraternity. The clash started over a money-related dispute,” Thomas wrote. “The Jew member had a disagreement with the Baggar and sought help from members of the Eiye group to fight, without explaining what had actually happened.”

A video clip seen by PUNCH Metro showed the deceased lying motionless in a pool of blood following the altercation.

The spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the killing in a text message sent to PUNCH Metro, saying that an investigation was ongoing to apprehend the suspects. “Confirmed. Investigation is ongoing,” Edafe stated.

The killing adds to a disturbing trend of cult-related clashes and violent disputes in Delta communities. Earlier this month, PUNCH Metro reported the death of a teenager identified as Rama in Ibusa, following a suspected cult attack. Security agencies have repeatedly warned that minor disputes often linked to money, relationships, or rival affiliations are increasingly escalating into deadly confrontations.

Police authorities have urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to report disputes promptly for mediation to prevent further loss of life.
