The Osun State Government has issued a strong warning to traditional rulers in Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin-Osun communities, cautioning that they risk dethronement if communal clashes persist in their domains.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, in a statement released on Monday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, expressed concerns over reports of renewed tensions in the conflict-prone areas. He warned that the government would take decisive action against any traditional ruler or individual found to be fueling unrest.
“In the midst of the Sallah celebrations, I received reports of some individuals planning another round of conflict in Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin-Osun. Security agencies have intensified surveillance to prevent any attacks,” the statement read.
The governor emphasized that peace agreements signed by community leaders must be upheld, warning that any violation would have serious legal consequences. He also disclosed that security operatives were accelerating investigations into key figures suspected of instigating the crisis.
Adeleke clarified that the recent relaxation of the curfew was done on humanitarian grounds to alleviate the suffering of innocent residents. However, he warned that any further unrest would lead to the full reinstatement of a 24-hour curfew.
“The curfew adjustment was made out of compassion, as many innocent people are affected by the actions of a few troublemakers. However, any attempt to exploit this gesture for renewed violence will be met with a full reimposition of the 24-hour curfew,” he stated.
The governor further warned that any traditional ruler under whose domain fresh violence erupts would face immediate removal from office.
“Additionally, I will remove from office any traditional ruler where violence recurs. This decision is non-negotiable. Royal fathers must call their subjects to order because the government will not hesitate to take firm action,” Adeleke added.
The Osun State Government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state and urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities that could jeopardize stability in the affected communities.
