The Labour Party (LP) has declared that the upcoming Anambra governorship election will serve as a litmus test for its strength and preparedness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
LP’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, made this known on Saturday in Awka, Anambra State, during a forum organized by the party’s Directorate of Mobilization and Integration. The event allowed governorship aspirants to engage with delegates ahead of the party’s primary election scheduled for next Saturday.
Confirming the development in a statement on Sunday, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said the party is focused on building a solid foundation for future elections.
Anambra Election: A Strategic Move for 2027
Speaking through the party’s National Women Leader, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, Abure emphasized that Anambra will be a crucial test for LP’s nationwide structure and popularity.
“We want to use Anambra to test what 2027 will be. The Labour Party has grown beyond a briefcase party. We are in all the states of Nigeria and Abuja, and we are getting ready not just for Anambra but for 2027,” he stated.
He urged all party members and aspirants to unite behind the eventual candidate after the primaries to strengthen the party’s chances in the November governorship election.
“After the primary election this Saturday, no one is permitted to be angry. We will all join hands to emerge victorious in the main election in November. Let us not be weak, let us not bicker, let us all stand strong, be united, and nothing will be impossible for us to achieve,” he added.
LP Governorship Aspirants Present Vision for Anambra
The party’s two Anambra governorship aspirants, Dr. George Moghalu and John Nwosu, were present at the forum, where they engaged party members with their manifestos.
Moghalu identified loss of public trust in governance as a major challenge in Anambra, citing security failures and thuggery in tax enforcement as key issues. He pledged to restore public confidence and rebuild governance structures in the state.
Labour Party Eyes Stronger Grassroots Presence
Abure also revealed that the LP was working towards establishing a strong presence at every polling unit across Anambra, noting that the state election would be a defining moment for the party’s national aspirations.
With the party’s growing influence, LP is positioning itself as a major contender in Anambra while laying the groundwork for its 2027 presidential ambition.
