Two parents have accused a private school in the Arepo area of Ogun State of performing unauthorized incisions on their children, resulting in serious health complications, PUNCH Metro reports.
One of the parents, Abosede, mother of a four-year-old boy identified simply as Alamis, said she first noticed the incision on March 2, after her son complained of persistent itching on his stomach.
According to her, the situation escalated three weeks later when Alamis fell ill and was diagnosed with an infection linked to the incision.
“On March 2, my son started complaining of itching on his stomach. When I checked, I found an incision. When I asked him about it, he said he didn’t know who did it. The marks looked uneven, as though he was asleep when it was done,” Abosede explained.
She added that her concerns grew when another parent reported discovering a similar mark on her child’s body.
“The following day, while I was at my shop, another parent whose daughter attends the same school told me she had found an incision on her daughter as well. Our only connection is the school, which raised my suspicion,” she added.
Another Child Hospitalized
Another parent, Oluwatoyin Adurogboye, also raised concerns after her three-year-old daughter, Karla, fell seriously ill shortly after returning from school on February 28.
Adurogboye said Karla, who had recently recovered from malaria and an infection, was placed on oxygen due to breathing difficulties after her condition worsened.
“When I picked her up from school, she fell asleep in the car and slept for six to seven hours. At home, I noticed a scratch on her spine but thought it was minor. The next day, her condition worsened—she had a high temperature, began coughing and vomiting, and later experienced breathing difficulties,” Adurogboye recounted.
While at the hospital, she again noticed the mark. When she questioned her daughter, the child reportedly muttered “my teacher” five times before becoming unresponsive.
“When we got home and I asked again, she said it was her aunty at school who put pepper on her back in the bathroom,” she added.
School Denies Allegations
The two mothers confronted the school’s proprietress, who denied any involvement, suggesting the children might have received the marks elsewhere.
When the parents requested to review CCTV footage, they were told the cameras had not been functioning for several days.
“She only showed us footage from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., claiming there was no light between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., despite the school having an inverter,” Adurogboye said.
Legal Action and Police Involvement
While Abosede’s family has taken the matter to court, Karla’s parents have urged authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and demand access to the full CCTV recordings.
Attempts to reach the school’s proprietress were unsuccessful. Although she promised to return a reporter’s call, she had not done so as of the time of filing this report.
The Ogun State Police Command is yet to comment on the ongoing investigation.
